The boxing instructor for MMA Judo Center is Kevin R. Gerstel, CSCS.  Upon graduating from Merrimack College in 2003, Kevin received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Medicine, with a concentration in Exercise Physiology.  He became recognized as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) after sitting for the certification exam in 2004.  Kevin is currently registered through USA Boxing as both a coach and amateur boxer.  He is also certified in CPR and First Aid.

Kevin started his own personal training & boxing instruction business, RESULTS Personal Training, in late 2004.  From 2005 to the present, Kevin has himself trained and competed as an amateur boxer.  In late 2006, he also became registered with USA Boxing as a coach.  He has since aided boxers as a cornerman & coach in numerous amateur boxing events, including the 2007 Golden Gloves Novice Tournament in Lowell, MA.

Since early 2009, Kevin became the boxing instructor at MMA Judo Center, where he has taught group boxing classes, as well as 1-on-1 private sessions.  Over his years involved with the sport, Kevin has worked with people of all levels of boxing/striking.  As of June 2010, Kevin has already had two of his boxing students from Meara's Martial Arts go on to become competitive amateur boxers, having started as complete beginners.

Below is a clip of sparring between our instructor (white tee) and former student Dave Breslin, who has since gone on to become a competitive amateur boxer, scoring a 2nd round knockout in his very first bout.  Dave is still a member of our open sparring group & continues to train with us regularly.  Check out our video page to see more sparring with boxing students.

BOXING

The aim of the boxing program at MMA Judo Center is to teach students the fundamentals of boxing, while guiding them through the kind of intense conditioning routine that actual competitive boxers undergo in boxing gyms all over the world.

The boxing program here is not to be confused with "cardio-boxing" classes, which involve choreographed aerobics that don't actually teach boxing fundamentals.  If you commit to our boxing classes, you will actually learn how to box.  With our program, you can eventually participate in optional light-to-full contact sparring with the instructor, and even with other students at open sparring sessions.

The boxing instructor, Kevin Gerstel, currently offers private boxing sessions by appointment only.  Kevin has availability to book private sessions at the studio every day except Saturdays.  Call for available time-slots.  Sample one private session for only $20!

Private sessions are 60 minutes in duration and involve a complete boxer's training routine.  Classes start with warm-up & stretching, and end with cool-down & stretching.  Skipping rope is the preferred mode for warm-up & cool-down.  The actual training routine done at each session will differ slightly as students progress in conditioning & ability.  Activities covered include fundamentals instruction, shadowboxing, mittwork, heavybag, double-end bag, speed bag, conditioning drills, offensive & defensive technique tutorials, footwork drills, core-work, plyometrics, agility drills, calisthenics, time trials, and light-to-full contact sparring (optional).

Open sparring sessions occur on a weekly basis (see 'schedule' page).  These sparring sessions cost just $5 for those who have been invited by the instructor.  Only students who have demonstrated a high level of discipline, sportsmanship, and a firm grasp on the sport's fundamentals receive an invitation to join the open sparring group.
